Mauracher Berg
A million-years-old Mosaic

The Mauracher Berg rises above the lowlands of Elz and Glotter as Carol. We are in the tectonically active zone of transition between the Black Forest and the upper Rhine. The mountain is built from a variety of different rock types. The photo shows how it looked like 240 million years ago. Take a look at the exciting story of the stones...

A million-years-old Mosaic:
you are standing on it!

During the walk around the Mauracher Berg we encounter rocks that have been created in the history of the Earth at different times. The oldest layers of rocks are the Gneisses, which are found in the layers below the sandstones and limestones of the shell store. The ancient gneiss geologically belongs to the Black Forest, whereas the shell limestones and sandstones represent surface layers of the Mesozoic era. The 'Black Forest', which runs from north to south directly through the mountain is responsible for the occurrence of different rocks. Fractures and dislocations attest to drop the package of plaice in the Rhine trench.
