„Gaus-Haus“, Hauptstraße 78
Almost 300 years old:
The "Gaus-Haus"

Inscriptions on the beam document that the house was built by Hans Lupberger and Eva Bischof in 1728. Together with the deep well it was part of a larger farm. It is named after its previous owner Alfred Gaus, who lived from 1883 to 1956. When his daughter Irma Gaus passed away in 2001 the house became property of the community which renovated the building and covered the roof again in 2017. Learn how people lived in Denzlingen 300 years ago, when the mayors were still called "Heimburger"...

When the house was built in the year 1728, all inhabitants in Denzlingen were Evangelicals. Due to the legally binding “New Church Constitution”, which was introduced by the Markgraf in the year 1556, every citizen became evangelical.

The lands opposite the long border to the Habsburg towns of Heuweiler, Glottertal, Suggental, Waldkirch and Buchholz were regarded to be the Catholic "foreign country". Contacts hardly remained and even marriages beyond the confessional boundaries were forbidden. The municipal and ecclesiastical administration was located in Emmendingen.

In the village, a reeve (“Vogt”) served as an official representative. At that time, from 1720 to 1731 Conrad Nübling held this position.

The interests of the citizens were represented by the mayor, who was called Heimburger, and a council of twelve citizens, who were both elected by the citizens.
