Narrenbrunnen – The Jester Fountain

The Jester Fountain of the Welschkorngeister Guild was inaugurated in the summer of 2022 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Denzlingen Carnival Guild. The fountain base had already been in place in front of the former Volksbank building. The bronze figure of the Welschkorngeist was funded through donations on the occasion of the jubilee.
In the spring of 1972, Edgar Bechtold, Florian Düsch, Rolf Schemmer, Alfred Siefert, Paul Teufel, and Manfred Zimmermann founded a carnival guild in Denzlingen, which they named 'Welschkorngeister' ('Welschkorn' = corn; hence, the carnival figure has a corn cob as a nose).

In 1984, during Denzlingen's 1000th-anniversary celebration, the guild was admitted to the Association of Upper Rhine Carnival Guilds.
Until the 50th anniversary in 2022, the carnival guild had six 'Oberzunftmeister' (chief guild masters): Manfred Zimmermann, Horst Rainer, Edgar Bechtold, Werner Kunkler, Rüdiger Hentschel, and Michael Heizmann.

While 50 years, half a century, is indeed a proud age, in historically Catholic communities like Waldkirch (Carnival Guild Krakeelia 1865 e.V.) or Elzach, where carnival festivities have been documented since 1530,  carnival has a much longer tradition.
